This time last year, UK PLC had the Olympics to contend with (not to mention the distraction of the Jubilee). Certainly we felt the impact in our business. You could hear the tumble weed blowing past the Chiumento recruitment desks as hiring seemed to be put on hold for the Summer. Move forward 12 months and the story couldn’t be more different.
If you look at the market stats, there is a clear picture emerging. The number of HR jobs being advertised on the key advertising sites have dropped significantly from the same time period in 2011 and is lower than last year when the various festivities were taking place.
Interestingly, if we look at figures for the number of jobs advertised on LinkedIn, those figures would indicate an increase in the number of HR jobs. Generally employers seem to be favouring LinkedIn over agencies (there is about an 80/20 split) so this would indicate that organisations seeking to find talent through direct routes is on the increase. This goes some way to explaining the decline in jobs being advertised elsewhere by agencies.
At Chiumento, however, we appear to be bucking the trend. I can’t remember a Summer when we were this busy. Our candidates are telling us that there is an increasing range of opportunities about and it’s definitely still true that good people will always get snapped up quickly. I would advise employers seeking to recruit that they try and move their recruitment processes forward reasonably swiftly. Don’t wait until after the Summer holidays to revisit the pile of CVs on your desk as the best people may already have been recruited by your competitors!
